Is It God or Just Fear?

How Christian women in business can tell the difference.

An open Bible in soft morning light

If you have ever felt overwhelmed in your business and called it discernment, this one is for you. If you have ever pulled back from something you knew God was asking you to do and told yourself He was just closing the door, keep reading.

I see this pattern in Christian women constantly. In DMs. In coaching conversations. And in my own life more times than I want to admit.

It goes like this. She starts something. A new offer. A launch. A bold move she felt clearly called to make. Then it gets hard. Or uncomfortable. Or her nervous system flares up. Or she watches someone else do the same thing and not get the result she wanted. So she pulls back. She retreats into something smaller, something safer, something less exposed.

And here is the part that gets me. She calls that retreat discernment. She says God redirected her. She says she is waiting on His timing.

Girly, I have to tell you the truth, because that is what I am here for. That was not discernment. That was fear with a little spiritual language sprinkled on top.

The One Verse This All Flows From

For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.

2 Timothy 1:7, NLT

Read that again. He has NOT given us a spirit of fear. That is not vague. That is not sometimes. That is a categorical statement. The spirit of fear is not from Him.

Which means this. If the spirit underneath your business decision is fear, it is not God leading you. That is not me being harsh. That is literally what the verse says. And once you actually internalize it, it changes how you make every single decision in your business.

Why We Keep Mistaking Fear for God's Voice

Three reasons this keeps happening, especially to us.

One. We were taught that pulling back is humble. Christian culture loves the woman who does not want too much. Who stays small. Who waits on the Lord. We get suspicious of ambition and forward motion. So when fear tells us to retreat, it feels holy. But humility is not smallness. Humility is being right about who you are and what you are called to. Sometimes humility looks like obedience to a hard yes, not a comfortable no.

Two. We confuse our nervous system with the Holy Spirit. That hot, racing, tight feeling in your chest is not the Lord. That is your nervous system in fight or flight. The body's stress response is so loud that it feels like a spiritual message. It is a biological one. Most of what we call unrest in my spirit is just anxiety that has not been named yet.

Three. Discernment language is easier than naming fear. If I say I am afraid to launch this offer, I have to deal with that fear. If I say God is redirecting me, I get to feel spiritual while doing the exact thing fear wanted me to do. Retreat with dignity. The church has handed us so much language for this that we do not even notice we are doing it.

The 30-Second Test

Here is the test I use. It takes about thirty seconds.

Step one. Name what you are feeling underneath. Not what you are thinking about the decision. What is happening in your body. Is your chest tight? Is your stomach in knots? Is your heart racing? If yes, pause. That is your nervous system, not your spirit.

Step two. Ask what you would do if you were not afraid. This question is diagnostic. If the answer is the opposite of what you are leaning toward, fear is making the decision. I would launch the offer. I would raise my prices. I would say yes to the speaking opportunity. I would keep going on the harder path. Whatever your unafraid self would do is usually closer to what God is actually asking.

Step three. Check the fruit.

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Galatians 5:22–23, NLT

If the spirit underneath your decision matches the fruit, peace and love and faithfulness, it is likely God. If it matches fear, urgency, panic, comparison, and scarcity, it is not. Peace does not mean the decision is easy. It means there is a deep rightness underneath, even when the path is hard.

What God's Leading Actually Feels Like

If fear feels tight and hot and racing and urgent, what does His leading feel like?

In my own life, and in what I have watched in hundreds of women we coach in The Well, His leading is quieter. Steadier. It feels like a covering. More boring than you would expect. Settled, not excited and not nervous. Like something deep in you is at rest, even when the path forward is uncertain. You do not have to talk yourself into it. You just know.

And it usually comes through scripture, repeated themes, or other people. God rarely shouts. He echoes. The same verse keeps showing up. The same word from a friend, a sermon, a song. The same nudge you keep ignoring. He is patient. He repeats. He does not manipulate you into rushing.

Hard Is Not the Same as Fear

Here is what trips us up. God WILL ask you to do uncomfortable things. He will ask you to do hard things that stretch you. That is formation. That is not the same as fear.

The difference is what sits underneath. God's hard things come with peace under the discomfort. Fear's hard things come with panic under the discomfort. Same external stretch. Completely different spirit underneath. He does not move you through urgency. He moves you through trust.

So when you feel that pressure that says this opportunity will disappear, decide right now, if you do not post today you will not make a sale, hear me. That is not God. That is fear of marketing. God is not a salesman. He does not manipulate. He invites. And His invitations carry a quiet patience that fear never has.

Where This Leaves You

Here is where we land. God has not given you a spirit of fear. So if fear is the spirit underneath a business decision, it is not Him.

I love the women who keep retreating and calling it discernment. I have been one of them. But it is costing them their callings, and it has to stop.

So use the test. Name what you are feeling underneath. Ask what you would do if you were not afraid. Check the fruit. And learn what His real leading feels like. Settled. Quiet. Patient. Full of trust.

You can stop being confused by your own anxiety, girl. You can stop calling fear by spiritual names. You can start moving in the direction He is actually inviting you toward. He is not asking you to panic. He never has been.

If you recognized yourself in this, if you have been making decisions from fear without realizing it, I made something free for you. It is called the Fruit Quiz. It takes about two to three minutes, and it helps you figure out what is actually keeping your business from producing fruit. Not what someone else thinks. What is true for YOU.

Go take it and see what shifts. I would love to know.
