God Is Not a Vending Machine

If you have ever prayed about your business, God, should I take this client, should I raise my prices, just give me the breakthrough, and felt like nothing is coming back, this one is for you.

I have to say something out loud that a lot of us have been getting wrong. We treat God like a vending machine. We come with what we want. We insert the prayer. We push the button. And then we stand there waiting for the answer to drop. And when it does not come fast enough, we get frustrated, like the machine is broken.

God is not a vending machine. He never has been. The reason your prayers are not producing the outcomes you want is not because the machine is broken. It is because He was never a machine in the first place. We have been asking for the wrong thing. And once you understand what to ask for instead, everything changes.

This Is Not Judgment. It Is Correction.

If you felt a little called out by that, good. I felt called out by my own teaching here. This is something I had to learn the hard way. I am not coming at you with judgment. I am coming at you with the same frustration you have been feeling, just from a few years further down the path. Because I spent YEARS praying the vending machine way. And I want to save you some of those years.

What Vending Machine Prayer Actually Sounds Like

Let me show you what it sounds like, so you can recognize it in your own life.

It sounds like transactional asks. God, should I take this client? Should I raise my prices? Should I launch this offer? Send me five new clients this month. Help this launch convert. Just open this door.

Hear me. Those are not bad prayers. But they are prayers aimed entirely at outcomes. You are asking the machine for what you want and waiting for the dispenser to make a sound.

And underneath it, there is a quiet exchange running. I prayed, so I should get an answer. I tithed, so my business should grow. I obeyed in the small thing, so He should reward me with the big thing. It is subtle, but it is there. And it turns prayer into a transaction instead of a conversation with your Father.

Here is what that produces. Frustration. Spiritual disillusionment. That quiet thought that maybe God is not really listening, or maybe He only answers for other women, or maybe you are just not spiritual enough. None of that is true. The problem is not God. The problem is what you have been asking Him for.

What Solomon Got Right

There is a story I cannot stop thinking about, because it shows exactly what we have been getting wrong.

In 1 Kings 3, Solomon has just become king. He is young, he is overwhelmed, and he is called to something far bigger than he feels ready for. Most of us know that season. And God appears to him in a dream and offers him something staggering. A blank check.

This is the vending machine moment. The dispenser is wide open. Solomon could ask for anything. Wealth. A long life. His enemies wiped out. The biggest, most successful kingdom anyone had ever seen. Any outcome you can imagine, he could have named it and gotten it.

And what does he ask for? Wisdom. An understanding heart, to know right from wrong and to lead the people God gave him well. He did not ask for the outcomes. He asked for the capacity to make good decisions in pursuit of God's purposes. Completely different orientation.

Now here is the part that undoes me. God is so pleased that Solomon asked for wisdom instead of outcomes that He gives him the wisdom AND throws in everything else. Wealth. Honor. A long life. The very things Solomon did not ask for, he received, because he asked for the right thing first.

That is the pattern. We beg the machine for outcomes. God keeps inviting us to ask for wisdom instead. And when we finally do, when we build our whole prayer life around wisdom instead of around outcomes, He so often provides the outcomes too.

Generously. Without finding fault. God's standing offer to you is wisdom. And we keep declining it because we want the specific client, the specific launch number, the specific breakthrough.

This Is Really a Relationship Problem

But I have to take you deeper than prayer technique. Because underneath all of this is a relationship problem.

We treat God like a vending machine when we are distant from Him. When we want His hand more than His face.

Sit with that one. The closer you get to Him, the deeper you go into the gospel, the less you even come to Him for outcomes. You just start wanting HIM. The relationship becomes the point. And that is exactly where the wisdom lives. In the closeness, not the transaction.

A vending machine is for strangers. You do not have a relationship with a vending machine. You do not know it, and it does not know you. The transaction is the only thing happening between you. But real wisdom is for the daughter who stays close. The daughter who does not need a transaction because she has a Father. The daughter who comes to Him for who He is, not just for what He can give.

Once you are that close, once He is your Father and not your vending machine, you stop needing Him to spell out every little business decision. You start seeing things the way He sees them. You stop praying "should I take this client" and start praying "God, give me the wisdom to see what is actually going on here." Different posture. Different proximity. And the outcomes you were grasping for? They tend to follow the woman who went after His heart first. Just like Solomon.

We have had the prayer backwards. We have been asking the machine for what we want. He has been waiting for us to get close enough to ask the Father how He sees it.

Where This Leaves You

God is not a vending machine. So stop praying like He is. Stop asking Him for outcomes and start asking Him for wisdom. Stop wanting His hand more than His face. Get close enough that the asking itself changes, where you stop needing every answer spelled out because you are finally seeing things the way He sees them.

And hear me, He has been waiting. The vending machine version of God you have been frustrated with is not who He actually is. He is a Father. He is offering you wisdom. And He is offering you Himself.

So stop banging on the machine, girl. Sit down with your Father.
